BACKBURNER is a Bozeman, Montana-based poly-stylistic jazz quartet that has worked together for almost 20 years. During that time they recorded five CDs, all favorably reviewed by the, prestigious international jazz music magazine “Le Jazz Hot” [Paris]. The group was featured on season 1 of the 9-time Emmy Award winning Montana PBS-TV program “11th & Grant with Eric Funk” and is partly responsible for the creation of that series due to the powerful public response to the PBS Christmas Special “A Jazz Peace” in 2004. The group features Alan Fauque, saxophones, Eric Funk, piano, Eddie Tsuru, bass, and Mike Gillan, drums.

Alan Fauque (saxophones) has made a career in music by performing with people who have inspired him. He recently relocated to the Madison, WI area and continues to find new musical opportunities. Most recently he is working with three different big bands, two jazz combos, an events band and duos with his wife, Roxy.

Eric Funk has worked as a professional jazz musician for 45 years. During that period he has performed in numerous jazz trios and jazz quartets. Funk played piano with jazz legendary vibraphonist Terry Gibbs, opening for Dave Brubeck, and has backed Dan Balmer, Gloria Loring, Trini Lopez, Jim Messina, Lyle Wagoner, Helen Reddy, Ted Danson, Bill Dana, and The Supremes.

With more than 25 years of teaching experience, Eddie T. studied with studio legend Chuck Rainey (Steely Dan, Quincy Jones, Aretha Franklin) and master bassist Jeff Castleman (Duke Ellington, Michael Jackson, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Ella). Eddie has worked with Drifters, Dave Walker (lead vocalist with Savoy Brown, Fleetwood Mac, Black Sabbath), Ron Strykert (Grammy winner Men at Work), Tracy Nelson (two time Grammy nominee), The Platters, Eric Funk (Grammy nominee), Minnesota Blues Band (which included Prince’s horn section), Ignacio Berroa (jazz legend), Deep Banana Horns (Allman Bros, Derek Trucks, Govt Mule), Sandy Hackett’s Rat Pack Show, Eric Kalb (Greyboy Allstars, John Schofield), Jack Walrath (Mingus), Bob Braye (Miles Davis, Pharaoh Sanders), Bob Nell, Joey Gian, Andrew Gromiller, Gaynelle Neville, Ric Parnell (Spinal Tap, Atomic Rooster), Bob Packwood (Blue Rodeo), Jeni Fleming, John Bohlinger (bandleader of “Nashville Star” TV show), and Meagan Mullins (Nashville Artist, Shakira).

Drummer/percussionist Michael Gillan has been a mainstay on the Southwest Montana music scene since 1976 when he relocated to his father's, grandparent's, and g-grandparents home state from the San Francisco Bay Area. He has provided
the rhythmic foundation for many successful local groups, as well as filling in for several national and international acts in need of a drummer. Known for his ability to transcend musical styles, Michael is equally at home playing Blues, R&B, Jazz, Latin Jazz, Funk, and Country/Western.
